Junior Coastal Advisor/Researcher

Join our Resilient Ports and Coasts Department in Delft to help develop sustainable solutions for coastal and port challenges—we’re seeking a motivated new team member!  

What can you expect as junior coastal advisor researcher? 

As a coastal advisor/researcher you will contribute to high-end consultancy and R&D projects as part of various project teams. Alongside technical experts form Deltares you will work on diverse projects to eventually become an expert in movement of water, sediment- and morphodynamics. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other departments on topics like offshore engineering, renewable energy storm surge barriers, subsurface interactions and nature-based solutions. Your future colleagues  Zeta and Femke for example, they work on various projects that they find interesting. 

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Applying data-driven methods to analyse e.g. morphological changes.
  • Using, developing, and validating numerical models (e.g., Delft3D, XBeach, ShorelineS) and applying them to real world problems of our clients.
  • Providing input to clients on their resilient coastal and port infrastructure designs.
  • Engaging with stakeholders and clients to understand needs and distil the latest trends and innovations.
  • Contributing to Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) with industry partners on new technologies and products.

Depending on your affinity, and the project availability, your work includes numerical modelling, remote sensing, complex data analysis, digital twins etc.

Who are you? 

  • You approach challenges with curiosity and look at them not only from a technical perspective, but also from a broader stakeholder context. 
  • Programming is something you like to do. Preferably in Python or otherwise in Matlab; 
  • Experience with numerical modelling, especially sediment transport and morphology is a plus.
  • Experience with (big) data and data science is beneficial;
  • You recently obtained MSc in Coastal / Hydraulic / Offshore / Dredging / Marine Engineering, Physical Geography, or similar. 

Due to the Dutch client base and workload we prefer candidates that are fluent in Dutch and English (both in speech and writing). If you do not speak Dutch, you should be willing to learn (via our Dutch lessons program).

  • A year contract with a prospect to permanent employment. Our starting salary is gross €3.864 per month based on 40 per week;
