Project researcher Climate Adaptation and Nature-based Solutions at Deltares

What can you expect as project researcher? 

You will work on the project Commit2Green. This project focuses on the application of Nature-based solutions in European cities. Particular on climate vulnerability analyses and methodology development for greening 8 European cities such as Barcelona, Milan and The Hague.

You will contribute to and be responsible for climate risk analysis and tool development for the planning and simulation of Nature-based Solutions. Conducting Applied scientific research resulting in scientific publications is an important objective of this position. You will do this by working together with Deltares colleagues and the international partners.

Your responsibilities

  • Your main task is to perform climate risk analysis for the pilots in European cities based on existing tools like FloodAdapt and the Climate Resilience City tool and/or development of an urban heat stress model. Analytic and programming skills are therefore a must!  
  • Improve existing tools for climate adaptation with better functionalities for planning and simulation of Nature-based Solutions and apply these in pilot cities.
  • Contribute to provide advice to partner cities on approaches for planning of Nature-based Solutions, in collaboration with other project partners.
  • Contribute to workshops in partner cities and present results in project meetings
  • Publication of project results. 

The team 
Your post-doc research will be embedded within the European Project Commit2Green and the Urban Resilience and Spatial Transformation Department (USP) at Deltares. You will be supervised by project leader PhD. dr Reinder Brolsma, and closely work with a team of applied researchers. Your main office location will be in Utrecht with the option to part-time work in the Delft office or at home.

Requirements

You are a pro-active individual who enjoys applied research and aims for both scientific and societal impact. You also have: 

  • A PhD, or 4 years research experience preferably in urban hydrology or climate adaptation, environmental sciences or a related field;
  • Proven advanced skills in tools like python and GIS, to be able to work on the improvement and application of simulation software that is part of this project;
  • You have experience in working successfully in interdisciplinary and international research teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • A publication record suitable to your stage of career is a big plus;

The position is based in the Netherlands. Working remotely from another country is not possible. Due to the duration of the project ( 2 years) we have the preference for a candidate that can start as soon as possible. What we offer

Deltares offers excellent terms of employment. The position is for 0.8-1.0 FTE for the duration of the project (2 years). Ater this assignment, there is the option to discuss the possibilities of continuing employment within Deltares. Furthermore, we offer: 

  • A market conform salary. Scaling will be based on your experience. With a minimum of €4392,- gross per month based on 40 hours per week. 
  • ABP average salary pension, 34 days of vacation, vitality budget and a mobility budget.
