It’s my passion to be on a journey towards climate resilience inspired by nature.
Stefano Gamberoni
Jr. Consultant/Researcher at Deltares

I work at Deltares as a junior advisor and researcher. My main focus is on nature-based solutions and the carbon cycle in coastal areas. I work on solutions that address multiple challenges such as climate change and societal challenges, and that at the same time restore natural ecosystems. I don’t just work on more knowledge, but also on solutions to the challenges we face.

It might seem a bit pretentious, but I want to try and improve people’s lives and make them safer. That’s why I want to work here and be part of the solution or adaptation to climate change. Nature is my inspiration

Connected to the world

In high school I had a teacher for science and biology who changed my outlook on the world. This professor was a real environmentalist, he loved nature. He shared his knowledge and his passion with me. Since high school I’ve wanted to work in this area, especially in the field of climate change.

I feel connected to the world. When we talk about climate change, we don’t just talk about the environment but also about people. I’m very committed to helping people. This is my way of helping them. Of course, there are doctors that have a direct impact on people and save their lives. At Deltares, we have our research and in a way, I feel we do similar things. We develop solutions to save lives and to restore the environment.

I think it's good to show what’s happening, such as the extreme events that are now taking place. But there should also be some space left in the newspaper to show the good news. To show people that a big group of researchers, scientists, and engineers is working on solutions and adaptations every day.

From Italy to Delft

I studied environmental engineering in Italy and I did a six month internship here at Deltares. During my internship, I studied and tested innovative approaches to accelerate the watering processes of soft sediments by using plants or worms for example.

Already during my internship, I felt welcomed by the Deltares community. I like to interact with people and I didn't experience problems in finding friends or colleagues who were willing to talk with me, go outside sometimes, and do activities together.

My plan was to go back to Italy after six months. But I felt that by staying here I could really make an impact. On the other hand, in Italy, I have my family, including my girlfriend. This is the most difficult part of living here. I miss her. But we decided to focus on the positive things. We both are in the place that we need to be to be able to grow.
